Dyslexia

If you’re the parent of a child diagnosed with dyslexia, you know it shows up in many different forms. Your child may be struggling with one, some or all of the following:

Student with Dyslexia

  • Difficulty learning to read
  • Trouble sounding out words
  • Difficulty spelling
  • Mispronouncing words
  • Trouble expressing ideas in writing
  • Poor reading fluency

Often students with dyslexia are very intelligent, yet they struggle to keep up in school. They may have difficulty completing assignments in a timely manner and often misread directions, word problems and/or test questions. While they’re very capable of explaining concepts orally, when they’re required to respond to essay prompts or questions in written form, they struggle. And unfortunately, their grades suffer. Furthermore, they know they can’t read and/or write like the other kids. They see that they’re not performing as well on assignments. And they just know, they’re different.

Dyslexia Strategies and Solutions

At The Family & Learning Center, we offer a variety of strategies and solutions for students with dyslexia. We start with the Orton-Gillingham approach which teaches reading and spelling using all three learning pathways – auditory, visual, and kinesthetic-tactile. Depending on the age and specific needs of the student, we also provide instruction in reading fluency and comprehension, spelling, grammar, and written expression.

We have seen countless dyslexic students make incredible progress in reading, writing, and spelling. When you see a dyslexic student read a book or express their ideas in writing after struggling for so long, you see hope. And that is priceless.
